Community Resilience is the capability
to anticipate risk, limit impact, and bounce back rapidly through survival, adaptability, evolution, and growth in
the face of turbulent change. Resilience requires proactive mitigation and planning that includes the full fabric
of the community.
SPW has become a leading partner in the community resilience initiative. Utilizing research-driven data, an
all-hazards approach, and a regional planning framework, we work with the private and non-profit business sectors,
and local and regional responders to avoid cascading system failures. We help communities minimize a disaster’s
disruptive effects on everyday life and the local economy
SPW is currently partnering with Alcorn State University and Mississippi State University in the Mississippi Gulf
Coast communities of Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties to integrate small disadvantaged businesses, rural
employers, and the disaster response community into a mitigation, planning and response network. The initiative
is funded by the Department of Homeland Security-sponsored Southeast Region Research Initiative (SERRI) at the
Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
